Hello everyone, I’m Leah Lewin, a perinatal specialist and training development consultant for WRA UK and Champion for Make Birth Better. Today, I want to dive deep into an important topic that affects our communities: Black maternal mental health. During Black Maternal Mental Health Week, it’s crucial to acknowledge and address the cultural barriers that often hinder proper support for Black mothers during pregnancy and postpartum. With insights from experts like @themotherhoodgroup, and @wra_uk, we’ll explore how mothers, families, and allies can collectively break down these barriers and pave the way for better mental health support.

For Black Mothers:

  1. Prioritise Self-Care: As Black mothers, it’s easy to get caught up in societal expectations and cultural pressures. However, self-care is not selfish. Take time for yourself, whether it’s through meditation, journaling, or engaging in creative activities. Your well-being matters, and nurturing your mental health is a form of strength. It’s not just a buzz word, it’s a genuine necessity.

  2. 2. Seek Community: Building a support network is essential. Connect with other Black moms who understand your experiences. Platforms like @themotherhoodgroup, @mummys_day_out, @mums_prideteam, @motivationalmumsclub, @maternityengamentaction and @mumsandtea provide a safe space to share stories and seek advice from those who’ve been there.

  3. 3. Break the Silence: It’s time to shatter the stigma surrounding maternal mental health. Share your journey openly, whether through personal conversations or on social media. By speaking up, you’re not only helping yourself but also inspiring others to seek help and support.

  4. For Families:

  5. Educate Yourselves: Families play a pivotal role in supporting Black mothers. Educate yourselves about maternal mental health and the unique challenges Black motherss face. Follow experts like @theperinatalspecialist to gain insights into effective support strategies.

  6. 2. Listen Actively: Create an environment where your loved ones feel comfortable opening up about their feelings. Sometimes, all someone needs is a listening ear. Validate their experiences and offer empathy.

  7. 3. Challenge Cultural Norms: Cultural norms can sometimes perpetuate unrealistic expectations or downplay mental health concerns. It’s essential to challenge these norms and create space for open conversations about well-being.

  8. For Allies:

1. Amplify Voices: As allies, your role is to amplify the voices of Black mothers and advocate for their needs. Share resources, articles, and initiatives like @wra_uk’s change programs that focus on maternal mental health awareness.

2. Check Your Privilege: Yes I said it! Understand that you might not fully grasp the complexities of the experiences Black mothers face. Something @mamaandmedoula often speaks about! Check your privilege and approach conversations with humility and a willingness to learn.

3. Be a Supportive Presence: Sometimes, simply being there can make a significant impact. Offer to babysit, bring a meal, or provide a listening ear. Your support can go a long way in easing the challenges Black mothers encounter.

Breaking cultural barriers for Black maternal mental health is a collective effort that requires empathy, education, and action. Let’s support one another, challenge norms, and create an environment where Black mothers feel empowered to prioritise their well-being. Remember, change starts with us – moms, families, and allies working hand in hand. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of Black mothers everywhere.

Thank you to @themotherhoodgroup, for their dedication to this cause. Let’s continue to raise awareness, promote understanding, and advocate for better support for Black mothers during their incredible journey.
